The Center for American Literary Studies (CALS) has named Assistant Professor of English and American Studies Paul Nadal among eight participants in the 2020 First Book Institute.
“The stakes of successful publishing by early career professors are more urgent than ever given the current state of higher education promotion and publishing,” CALS notes in announcing the awards. The First Book Institute, now in its eighth year, offers a week of workshops and presentations led by institute faculty, to assist participants in transforming their projects into books that “promise to make the most significant impact possible on the field.”
Nadal’s project, “Remittance Fiction,” presents an interdisciplinary study of the relationship between novels and remittances in the Philippine diaspora. An article presenting a portion of Nadal’s research appears in American Literature (“A Literary Remittance: Juan C. Laya’s His Native Soil and the Rise of Realism in the Filipino Novel in English,” American Literature 89, no. 3 (September 2017): 591–626.)
