Alexander Gardner, Treaty Council of 1868 at Fort Laramie, 1868. Albumen silver print of glass negative, 18 × 10 in. National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Museum Support Center, Suitland, Maryland.

An experiment in narrative micro-history, this talk explores how a single photograph can help us think in new ways about the post-Civil War West. Tracing the tangled tales of a group of people who stood together — ever so briefly — to pose for a photographer at a remote military fort, it traces the ways in which larger American stories about race, citizenship, and violence bound East and West together in a tight embrace.
