This talk looks at the association between immigration and institutional transformation using a constructed data set of historical mass migrations over five centuries. The analysis finds that mass migration is positively associated with stable and democratic institutions. The data set shows that countries experiencing mass migration were less likely to see a major failure in their political institutions. Since 1800, institutions of countries that experienced mass migration tended to be more democratic.
